  1. 1893-1988. Australian-born South African 
  2. paleontologist and anthropologist, who 
  3. discovered in 1924 the first fossil remains 
  4. of the Australopithecenes, early hominids, 
  5. near Taungs in Botswana. He named them
  6. Australopithecus africanus, and spent many
  7. years trying to prove to sceptics that they
  8. were early humans, since their cranial and
  9. dental characteristics were not apelike in
  10. any way. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Leakey
  11. family found more fossils of this type and of
  12. related types in the Olduvai Gorge of E
  13. Africa, establishing that Australopithecines
  14. were hominids, walked erect, made tools, and
  15. lived as early as 5.5 million years ago.
  16. After further discoveries in the 1980s, they
  17. are today classified as Homo sapiens
  18. australopithecus, and Dart's assertions have
  19. been validated.
